    비틀즈의 멤버였으며, 역사상 최고의 싱어송라이터로 불린다.
    세계 최고 골드 디스크 기록을 60개, 역사상 가장 성공한 작곡가, 가장 돈이 많은 연예인 등의 기네스 기록을 가지고 있다. 또한 영국 차트에서 유일하게 솔로, 듀엣, 트리오, 콰르텟, 퀸텟, 그리고 자선 밴드의 모임으로 1위를 해본 적이 있는 사람이다.

    1965년에는 비틀즈의 멤버로서 대영제국 훈장 5등급(MBE)을, 1997년 3월 11일에는 단독으로 기사작위(Knight Bachelor)를 받았으며(그래서 '매카트니 경(Sir. McCartney)' 이라고도 불린다) 1992년에 폴라음악상을 수상했다. 오오 폴 오오 1987년 작곡가 명예의 전당, 1999년 로큰롤 명예의 전당에 솔로 아티스트로서 입성했다. 2012년 할리우드 명예의 거리에 헌정되었다.
    현재의 리이슈 (Reissue) 개념을 처음으로 도입했다. 자신의 앨범의 음질 상태가 마음에 안 들었던 폴이 그걸 직접 리마스터해서 재발매한 게 그 시초라 한다.
    또 자신의 파트인 베이스를 비롯하여 피아노 등 많은 악기들을 잘 다룬다. 그의 첫 솔로 앨범 'McCartney' 는 전곡이 폴의 독주로 채워져있으며 후에도 그런 시도를 자주 보여줬다. 심지어 조지 마틴은 드럼 실력이 기술적으론 (롤 주법에 한해서) 비틀즈의 드럼 담당인 링고 스타를 능가한다고 말했다. 누누이 말하지만 링고는 잘못이 없다
    특이하게도 '폴'이 중간이름임에도 '제임스'가 아닌 '폴'로 불린다. 집안에서도 태어나서부터 폴이라고 했다고 하는데, 그 이유는 자신도 정확히 잘 모른다고 한다. 아버지 이름도 제임스였기 때문에 구분하기 위해서라고 생각했지만 동생 피터 마이클도 중간이름 마이클로 부르는 걸 봤을 때 아일랜드계의 특징이 아닌가라고 폴 매카트니 본인이 추측하였다.
